As companies increased their automation to keep going in 2020 – and remote work and operations became a way of life – manufacturing tapped into 5G at an accelerated pace, paving the way for 2021 to be a transformative year for the industry.
Today, Verizon Business revealed results from the Verizon 5G Business Report, which surveyed 700 business technology decision-makers across several industries, including manufacturing, gauging interest in deploying 5G and specific use cases. Approximately 80 per cent of decision-makers view 5G as the path to growth opportunities in 2021 and beyond.
“Over the last year, 5G has become top-of-mind for businesses as they manage through condensed digital transformation timelines,” says Tami Erwin, CEO of Verizon Business. “These findings underscore the critical role 5G will play in economic recovery and growth, and we stand committed and ready to help our partners make that transition quickly and seamlessly.”
Key stats from manufacturing respondents revealed areas most valued for 5G implementation and new innovations being prioritized to combat effects of the pandemic. More than 80 per cent of respondents found real-time supply chain tracking the most beneficial application of 5G and the most likely to be implemented in the next two years.
Additional use cases can be found on pages 18 and 23 of the report, some top stats include:

  • Supporting system automation ranked highest amongst all industries and specific use cases for 5G deployment (49 per cent) by manufacturing respondents; and
  • Real-time supply chain tracking from shipment to shelves to combat theft and fraud while responding to inventory demands ranked highest in terms of sector specific benefits (88 per cent) and tied with real-time tracking of capacity and production in terms of likelihood of being deployed in next two years (82 per cent).
