Federal and provincial governments are putting their money where their mouths are on water and wastewater infrastructure, contributing to a total of $855,000 for Montreal.
“We are committed to investing in local infrastructure that provides communities with modern, reliable water and wastewater services,” said The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport and MP for Notre-Dame-de-Grâce‒Westmount, on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities. “This project in Montreal East, in addition to other major work taking place in the region, will help protect the environment and keep our communities healthy.”
Garneau, along with Kathleen Weil, Minister Responsible for Access to Information and the Reform of Democratic Institutions, Minister Responsible for Relations with English-Speaking Quebeckers and Member of the National Assembly for Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, made the announcement today that the governments of Canada and Quebec will each invest over $285,000 for the completion of a water-related infrastructures in Montreal West.
“Today I am proud to announce our government’s contribution to the modernization of aging water pipes in Montreal West, my riding,” said Weil. “Promoting the growth of an efficient water works network in the Montreal Region is a priority of our Stratégie gouvernementale pour assurer l’occupation et la vitalité des territoires.”
This financial assistance comes from the New Building Canada Fund. The city is also contributing over $285,000 for a total government-municipal investment of more than $855,000. The project involves replacing more than 300 metres of drinking water, waste water and storm water lines, as well as completing sewer separation work on Percival Street.
“I am delighted by the support from the governments of Quebec and Canada for this project, which has allowed the municipality to renew its infrastructure and ensure essential services for the community,” said Beny Masell, Mayor of Montreal West. “In keeping with the objectives set by our administration, the new underground facilities will benefit all Montreal West residents.”
