Ontario and BC schools take home water/wastewater student competition honours

The Water Environment Federation has announced its student competition winners during WEFTEC 2022 in New Orleans. There were 25 teams from four countries competing to solve water quality issues.

The University of Waterloo team of Lee Reck, Seoyeong Lee, Adele Watson, and Mark Lieberman took home the top prize in the water environment design category. Their project, completed on behalf of the Water Environment Association of Ontario, was a stormwater retrofit designed for MacMorrison Park in Barrie, ON.
The team proposed the construction of two stormwater management ponds in the park to attenuate high volume storm flows, maximize on-site detention, and improve water quality downstream.
The University of British Columbia team of Ramzi Hijazi, Mohamed El Badrawy, Ben Alberga, Caelan Accili and Parsa Mivehchi (pictured above from the left) took home the runner up prize in the wastewater category.
The team partnered with British Columbia Water and Waste Association on a biosolids management strategy for the at Regional District of Nanaimo that included new infrastructure sized to manage all biosolids from the four wastewater treatment plants for the next 50 years.
