New York State’s “Buy American” law is feeling the heat from the Ontario government, which is pushing back by limiting public sector procurement with suppliers in that state.
The new regulation which took effect on Sunday restricts government contractors with New York State suppliers – specifically when it comes to the use of structural iron.
Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne said the move is in response to “legislation that took effect in New York State… requiring the use of American-made iron in certain government road and bridge construction projects,” according to CP24.
The regulation is meant to “level the playing field, and will immediately be repealed if New York State abandons its Buy American restrictions.”
Opposition parties have called the move reckless and a desperate attempt to curry voter favour for the impending spring election.
