"Process upset" stops operations at oil sands site

Suncor Energy Inc. had to cease operations at its oil sands base plant near Fort McMurray, Alta., after a temporary power loss this week.

Company spokesperson Erin Rees would only describe the cause of the power loss as a “process upset,” but was unable to provide more detail because it was a “day to day operational issue.”

Power was restored later that same day.

She added that the incident did not impact the safety of the company’s employees or contractors, and that Suncor was focused on a safe return to operations.

During that return to operations, there was however a potential for additional flaring at the plant.
