Weston Foods in Cobourg will be closing their doors and up to 180 people will lose their job.
In a statement from Weston Foods, it states, “Weston Foods has made the difficult decision to close our Cobourg, Ontario bakery in the second half of 2020. Production from this facility will be relocated to other bakeries in the Weston Foods network.”
They continue in the statement to say that the 180 job, “…equates to a decrease of less than four per cent (of) their total workforce.”
The tough news was shared with employees today (Jan 13).
They add, that as a company, they are always working to understand consumer needs and to meet changing customer demands, and that important work informs their decisions to re-evaluate their bakery network and make changes to ensure their future success.
They continue by saying that, “Closing a bakery is one of the toughest decisions we ever face. We deeply regret the personal impact this closure will have on our Cobourg employees and are committed to providing support and resources to all those affected.”
Just last January (2019), we told you that Weston Foods, the parent company of Maplehurst Bakeries, was hiring 50 people at their cake bakery in Cobourg.
They add that the company will do all they can if employees are able to transfer and move or if there are other jobs at other bakeries, that they are welcome to apply.
Weston Foods is a North American bakery company, baking breads, rolls, donuts, pies, cakes, bagels, tortillas, cookies, crackers and more in more than 40 bakeries across Canada and the U.S.
